Trump warns of ‘potential death and destruction’ if he’s indicted. Bragg receives threats of assassination.
Donald Trump suggested on Friday that filing charges against him could result in “potential death & destruction” as he continued threats against the Manhattan district attorney.
“What kind of person can charge another person, in this case a former President of the United States, who got more votes than any sitting President in history, and leading candidate (by far!) for the Republican Party nomination, with a Crime, when it is known by all that NO Crime has been committed, & also known that potential death & destruction in such a false charge could be catastrophic for our Country? Why & who would do such a thing? Only a degenerate psychopath that truely (sic) hates the USA!” Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly after 1 a.m. Friday.
The post marked an escalation in Trump’s barrage of attacks against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as a grand jury is weighing whether to indict Trump over hush money payments made to a porn star to keep quiet an alleged affair during the 2016 campaign.
At the same time, Trump has been urging his supporters to protest and “take back our nation” in response to an indictment leading to fears that he is again instigating violence again public officials and offices.
Some Republicans, including Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), have sought to tamp down Trump’s calls for protests.
Bragg has said in an internal memo to staff that he will not be intimidated by Trump’s rhetoric. After Trump’s remarks, he was threatened with assassination in a letter containing non-hazardous white powder.
“ALVIN: I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!”″ said the typewritten note in a letter contained in an envelope addressed to Bragg, WNBC reported, citing law enforcement sources.
The letter, containing an Orlando, Florida, postmark from Tuesday, was found in the DA’s mail room in a lower Manhattan building after being received at 11:40 a.m. ET on Friday. The white powder in the envelope was found to be non-hazardous, the New York Police Department told CNBC.
A DA spokeswoman said, “The D.A. has informed the office that it was immediately contained and that the NYPD Emergency Service Unit and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection determined there was no dangerous substance.”
NYPD investigators and the FBI, which has an office close by, were at the scene investigating the letter.
Norm Eisen, a former Democratic special counsel during Trump’s first impeachment, called the post a “sickening threat” and a “call for violence.”
“Threatening a prosecutor is a crime in NY. In fact MULTIPLE crimes,” he tweeted, listing several statutes that he thinks Trump may have violated.
